House on the Hill reviewed

Louis Turpin/Roger Hubbard - House Up On The Hill, Hill House Records HIHOCD001

Louis sings and plays acoustic guitar; Roger plays Axl Resonator mandolin, Hub Resolectric guitar, National Steel guitar and performs backing vocals. They are joined by Colin Gibson on bass and Bruce Allen on drums.

The opening rootsy lilting groove of 'Down South New Orleans' (Anglin/Wright/Anglin) sets the tone for the following mere forty-four minutes. Of the eight covers and three originals, two of Louis' own titles, 'Tell Your Sister' and 'Ooh The Memories' stand apart as much as any titles in this exquisite set can. The choicest of covers are Waits & Brennan's 'Picture In A Frame' with an echo on the vocal, White's 'Rainy Night In Georgia', and Dylan's 'Forever Young', here played in memory of Eric Money. The mature Mama Josie guests on vocals for McCoy's 'Called You This Morning'. Roger's perfect guitar and mandolin phrases, Louis' well-worn, half-eaten voice, and the perfectly balanced rhythm section, all make for a brilliant record on first listen that keeps getting better with each playing.

Rating: 9 - Frank Franklin, 'Blues in Britain' magazine, December 2004
